Latest news on the organization of the Sustainable Waste Management: A Workshop on Principles & Practice, 18-22.6.2012
Wednesday, 09 May 2012 10:49

As the date of the "Sustainable Waste Management: A Workshop on Principles & Practice"  is fast approaching, the Athens Information Technology in collaboration with the Earth Engineering Center of Columbia University and WTERT Greece, are taking all necessary actions for the successful organization of the event.

The participation at the conference is very encouraging both at national and international level, in a time when the interest in the field of waste management is constantly increasing.

The participation of professionals in the field of energy is also remarkable, as well as engineers who want to deepen their knowledge in the field.Among the participants there are also professionals from world-leading companies in the field of design, construction and operation of waste management plants. Remarkable is also the interest of professionals in the field of energy, and engineers of various specialties who want to deepen their knowledge in relevant fields.

General information for WTE developing in Spain

The Waste Management in Spain is based mainly on landfill (60%), while recycling and composting represents 31% and WTE  only 9%. There currently 10 WTE Plants in Spain, with a total annual capacity of 2,7 million tons. Four of these ten WTE Plants are located in CATALONIA with a total capacity of 720,000 tpa.

Unfortunately the gate fees in landfills are very low, range from only 12-20 €/ton and that affects the development of new WTE Projects . Also there is not a unique and Integrated Municipal Solid Waste Strategy of the Central Government, resulting to autonomous waste management per eachdistrict. The Gate fees of the WTE Plants range from 30-80 €/ton.

 1.  TERSA  Waste to Energy (WtE) Plant in Barcelona & DISTRICLIMA

Dr Efstratios Kalogirou from the Earth Engineering Center, Columbia University and the President of Synergia as well (WTERT Greece), visited the Tersa WtE Plant in Barcelona which was put into operation in 1974 with two lines  and recently a third line is installed (see the attached Plant layout) . The Plant treats 21% of the Total MSW that are produced in Metropolitan Area of Barcelona (equivalent for 680,000 people). It annually produces 150 GWh Electricity and 68,000 ton steam for district heating and district cooling purposes (see the attached analytical technical information of DISTRICLIMA)

Main Technical Details of TERSA WTE Plant:

  • The Plant is equipped with three incineration lines with a capacity of 15ton/h per line (annual capacity of 350,000 tpa). The total area of the Plant is 40,000 m2 (10 acres) and it operates 8000 hours annually.
  • The grate technology used in the plant is Hitachi Zosen Inova.
  • The Flue Gas Cleaning System uses semi-dry scrubber, bag filter, SNCR and activated carbon injection system.
  • Bottom ash produced after incineration of MSW is reused as material for road activities while Fly ash is treated as hazardous waste (exported).
  • The gate fee is around 30€/ton, the cheapest in all Europe.
  • The selling price  of the productive electricity is 70€/MWh
  • Plant is equipped with continuous emission monitoring devices on flue gas emissions which calibrated according to the European standards (directive 2000/76).

2. Visit of DISTRICLIMA INSTALLATIONS

The Districlima (district heating & cooling, in cooperation with COFELY/GDF SUEZ) consists of a network of 13,1 Km with  a total investment of 50 million €. It is used by 60 Clients (Hotels, Hospital, office/commercial buildings , residential area, shopping malls etc.) . The contracted Heating Power is 44,45 MW and the contracted cooling power is 68,29 MW.  The advantages of this state of the art system are:  potable water savings, reduce of noise pollution, no visual impact on buildings . Heat and cooling network runs through the city streets and it is composed of four parallel pipelines, two for hot water (pumped at 90 C and sent back at 60 C) and two for cold water (pumped at 5,5 C and sent back at 14C), which carry energy from the production plant to the substations of energy exchange points at the customer’s buildings (174C saturated steam from the WTE Plant is used in adsorption coolers) .
